Slate and Glass Mosaic Countertop

The Quail Tree House in Newport, Rhode Island, is the former residence of Edith Wharton - famed author of 'The Age of Innocence' and 'Ethan Frome'.

In the Spring of 2003, the home was turned into a Designer Showhouse, and this Slate and Glass Countertop was created for the kitchen.

Measuring approximately 14' x 2'6", this dramatic mosaic countertop was created in The Art of Life Studio and then transported to the Quail Tree House where it was installed on site.

Following the run of the Show, we carefully removed the Countertop and brought it back to The Art of Life Studio.

The Countertop was subsequently purchased by a gentleman in Michigan who wrote to tell us that he "...was ecstatic to have this piece!". The following pictures were taken by this gentleman after the mosaic was installed as a bar countertop in his home:

And finally, two close-ups showing details from the piece. While photographs can never capture the true beauty of a work of art, these pictures can at least hint at the majesty of this countertop....the beautifully colored earth-toned slate with its sometimes rough texture juxtaposed with the smooth brilliance of the bronze, black, and gold glass tile.....a treasure not only to see, but to touch....
